The Berkshire series uses a 2-inch x 3.5-inch top rail with proprietary snap-lock brackets; the Hampton series runs a heavier 2-inch x 4-inch rail with routed pocket posts. The older Stratford line, discontinued around 2018, shares rail dimensions with Berkshire but uses a different bracket spacing (6 feet on center versus 8 feet). Check the inside of your post cap for the embossed Tamko logo and series name, or measure the rail height at the bracket.

We source OEM Tamko brackets and caps through regional distributors in Fort Lauderdale, but for discontinued Stratford parts we use American Fence Supply’s compatible line, which matches the snap geometry and carries the same UV rating. The aftermarket decision depends on whether your fence is still under Tamko’s 20-year residential warranty; mixing non-Tamko parts can void coverage on the remaining structure. Signs Your Tamko Fence Installation Is Failing

• Rail pops out of bracket after wind. The stainless steel clip inside the bracket corrodes in salt air until it loses spring tension. In Pompano Beach, we see this at the 8- to 12-year mark, sooner if you’re within a mile of the ocean where the onshore breeze carries chloride.
• Post leans or rotates in the ground. Tamko’s standard 30-inch post depth works in clay soils up north; here, the loose sand and high water table let posts shift unless they’re set in concrete to 36 inches or sleeved with gravel drainage. We check the soil condition before we quote.
• Picket tops crack or discolor. The cap stock on economy-grade pickets is thinner than the substrate, so UV degradation concentrates at the exposed edge. Tamko’s premium Berkshire pickets use a full 0.060-inch cap stock; if yours are the thinner 0.040-inch, replacement is the only fix.
• Gate drags or won’t latch. The steel gate frame expands at a different rate than the vinyl sleeve, and after five or six years of thermal cycling the corners loosen. We re-square the frame and add a diagonal tension cable, or replace the gate if the sleeve has cracked.
• Bracket screws back out of the post. Tamko’s original spec called for #8 x 1.5-inch self-tapping screws; in the humidity here, the threads strip and the screw walks. We upsize to #10 x 2-inch stainless and pre-drill with a depth stop so we don’t blow out the post wall.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no high-tension danger in fence work like there is with garage door springs or electrical panels, but there are two places where DIY goes wrong fast. First, setting a post plumb in sandy soil while keeping the concrete from washing out in the hole takes practice; we’ve pulled out plenty of homeowner posts that were straight on Saturday and leaning by Wednesday. Second, matching Tamko’s color across production lots is harder than it looks, the “white” from 2019 is not the same formulation as 2024, and a patch job shows from the street.
